Ghulam-Kassim Variation

Scotch Game

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 Nxd4 5.Qxd4 d6 6.Bd3

Black trades knights on d4, bringing White's queen to the center.

Practice this line

The idea

After 4...Nxd4 5.Qxd4 d6 6.Bd3, White's queen stands in the center and White develops freely. Black has traded a developed piece and must find time to develop and to chase the queen.

Lichess's opening names call this the Ghulam-Kassim Variation.

Plans for White

Develop quickly: Bd3, Nc3, Be3 and castle, keeping the queen active but safe. White's lead in development and the e4 pawn give a comfortable game. Keep the e4 pawn defended, since it is White's main central asset.

Plans for Black

Develop with ...Nf6 and ...Be7, and use ...c5 or ...Nf6 with ...Be6 to gain time against the queen. Then castle and aim for a solid position. Trading queens would ease Black's development problems.

Watch out for

For White, the queen. In the center it can be harassed with ...c5, ...Nc6 or ...Nf6 and ...Be6, so have a safe square ready.

For Black, falling behind in development. With White's pieces already active, slow moves make it hard to catch up.
